| While Bilberry is often found in Western Asia
as well as the Rocky Mountains in the United States, the plant is
actually a native of the European Blueberry. It is related to the
cranberry, huckleberry and blueberry family and produces an edible
berry that is commonly used to produce a filling for a variety of
food products including cobblers, jams and pies.
Throughout history, the leaves as well as the dried berries of
this plant have been used to create a tea that was useful for treating
many different medical ailments. It was not until World War II;
however that the health benefits of Bilberry was truly recognized.
During this time the plant earned a reputation with Royal Air Force
pilots, who reported increased night vision after they ate jam made
from bilberry.
While bilberry extract has also been traditionally used as a diarrhea
treatment, in more recent years it has been touted as a promoter
of good eye health; due to the reports issued by the Royal Air Force
pilots. It is believed that the tannic and cinnamic acids contained
within the plant are responsible for this marvel.
Today, it is widely believed that Bilberry may provide other ocular
health benefits such as treating macular degeneration as well as
cataracts and poor night vision. Flavonoids, contained within the
plan, are known to be useful as antioxidants and may be beneficial
in preventing cancer by rooting out free radicals that are contained
within the body. It is believed that diabetics may find some relief
from eye problems when using this herb.
Furthermore, Bilberry extract has been promoted as a diuretic as
well. As such, it has been used to treat kidney stone and urinary
tract infections. Sore throats have also been treated with this
plant, after it is boiled to make a tea. Hemorrhoids and varicose
veins may be relieved with use of this herb. Finally, bilberry extract
has been promoted as a treatment for circulatory problems and is
thought that it may help to prevent heart attacks and heart disease.
Perhaps the best news is that there are no known side effects of
bilberry extract or possible drug interactions. Bilberry is available
in over the counter forms such as tea, capsules or liquid. The direct
extract provides the most health benefits, although it is certainly
possible to make a tasty tea from the fresh or dried berries of
this plant.
