| Damiana is derived from a small shrub that is
native to Mexico and the American Southwest as well as certain parts
of the West Indies. The damiana leaf is commonly harvested for a
variety of health benefits. It is sometimes referred to as Turnera.
This herb has long held a reputation as an aphrodisiac, and has
been believed to be capable of stimulating the sex drive of both
men and women. The Mayans and the Aztecs reportedly used the herb
to stimulate their sex drives as well as to treat medical problems
such as respiratory disorders. It is believed to act as an aphrodisiac
by improving circulation in and increasing sensitivity in both females
and males. Damiana herb may also increase sexual pleasure by decreasing
anxiety.
Other uses have included smoking it in a pipe and burning it to
both provoke and incite lovemaking and visions. Today a popular
Mexican liqueur also goes by the same name.
Other than its wide reputation as an aphrodisiac, damiana has also
been used to treat many other health issues in traditional Mexican
folk medicine. Such conditions include impotence, sterility, diabetes,
asthma, and bladder infections. Due to the fact that this herb is
known to act as a mild sedative it has been used as a sleep aid.
It has also been used as a laxative, diuretic and antiseptic for
the urinary system.
It is also believed to support good glandular health and contains
alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins and resins as the primary active
ingredients.
Various forms of this herb are available over the counter, including
tinctures, capsules and in tea form. Reports indicate that it contains
no known severe adverse side effects and is relatively safe for
consumption. Possible side effects do include potential breathing
problems, or tightness in the throat or chest. Other side effects
include skin hives or itchy, swollen skin. Women who are pregnant
or nursing as well as young children should not take the damiana
herb, as safety precautions have not been established for these
populations.
The most common recommended dosage for damiana is 2 to 4 grams
taken 2 to 3 times daily. It is recommended by the FDA as being
safe for consumption. Side effects such as nausea or upset stomach
may be reduced by taking it with a small meal. Above and beyond
its use for various medical benefits, it is also commonly used as
a food flavoring.
