| Manufacturers of liquid vitamins claim that they
are the ideal way for you to satisfy your daily requirements for
vitamin supplements. These manufacturers claim that, unlike vitamins
prepared in pill form, liquid vitamin supplements are completely
absorbed by your blood stream. These manufacturers claim that vitamins
in pill or tablet form have only an 80-90% absorption rate, while
liquid multi vitamins are touted as having nearly 100% absorption
rate because of their liquid form. Despite these claims, it’s
time to set the record straight with a few basic facts.
As with so many misleading claims, there is always a kernel of
truth to give them an air of legitimacy. For example, the claims
made these manufacturers of liquid vitamins do apply, for the most
part, to the cheap, supermarket variety brand of vitamins that are
sold to the masses. That’s because these supplements are made
from the cheapest materials possible. Upon entering the digestive
system, the nutrients are easily destroyed by your stomach acid.
Therefore, much of the nutrients delivered by these supplements
do indeed go to waste.
However, other vitamin supplements—known as “nutraceuticals”
because they are essentially whole food supplements—boast
a more impressive track record. These vitamins are made with high
quality, dense whole food nutrients, using sophisticated processes,
and with a built-in delivery system that ensures that the nutrients
are delivered directly into your bloodstream for maximum absorption.
Therefore it is not truly that all vitamins in tablet form are inefficient
and wasteful, and purveyors of liquid vitamins who claim otherwise
are being disingenuous, to say the least. Liquid vitamin supplements
are not necessarily more effective than pill or tablet vitamins,
and in many cases are not on par with vitamins created using nutraceuticals.
The claims about more efficient absorption using liquid vitamins
ignore or at least distort some basic facts. First, there are only
several main ways that vitamins can be effectively directly delivered
to your bloodstream: through injection, through the mouth and through
the upper intestines. Injection is popular for B12 and must be administered
by a physician. Taking vitamins through the mouth—or what
are popularly known as sublingual, or beneath the tongue—are
effective for some vitamins but not for others. Some nutrient molecules
are simply too large to pass through the mucous membranes of the
mouth. The final method is through the upper intestines, the method
employed by the very effective nutraceuticals described above.
Other claims about liquid vitamin supplements are that enzymes
have been added to them, to make them more bio-available. However,
this is not possible for one basic reason. Enzymes in liquid form
will only survive for 2 to 3 hours. Therefore they cannot be added
to liquid multi vitamins in any meaningful quantity. They can, however,
be added to nutraceuticals, and it is these that nutrient dense,
rich, whole food vitamins that recommend for your optimal health.
Choose liquids only if you have difficulty swallowing, but otherwise,
nutraceuticals are your best bet for maximum absorption. In the
end, of course, the final decision is yours.
