Lutein

Lutein Benefits

Being part of the antioxidant family, lutein is an essential component that our body needs to function properly. Lutein is mostly found in vegetables such as corn and spinach, but also in other greens such as lettuce and broccoli. A high concentration of lutein may be found in common types of fruits but also in egg yolk. As it is regarded as one of the most beneficial carotenoids it can be found in many lutein supplements.

Lutein works by reducing the concentration of free radicals that can develop into harmful elements for our organism. There are many diseases caused or amplified by free radicals, one of our biggest unseen enemies. In addition to lowering the chances of disease, lutein also works as a positive supplement for eyesight. Other beneficial effects may be found in the reduced skin degeneration it offers and the heightened eye membrane protection.

Oxidative stress is caused by the blue sunlight absorbed through the skin. The most affected areas are the parts of the body mostly exposed to both sunlight and artificial light. These are the eyes and most of the skin and lutein helps lower the negative effects of the blue rays. By reducing oxidation, lutein protects the mentioned organs from harm. This fact makes the antioxidant an important element in our body’s self defense mechanism.

Although the body needs lutein to function properly it cannot produce it on its own and has to extract it from food. This is why lutein supplements come in handy, especially if you feel you are not making the most out of lutein benefits. When ingested in reasonable quantities, lutein has powerful positive effects. A dosage of up to 20 mg a day is recommended and the benefits of lutein have been proven when the United States recognized it as a safe supplement. Here are a few things that the experts are saying about it:
"It (lutein) is the major carotenoid in the fruit and vegetable rich Asian diet, and a minor one in the typical American diet which doesn´t contain enough fruits and vegetables. There is very good evidence that the lutein in food helps protect against cataracts and macular degeneration, two common, age-related eye disorders."

Dr. Andrew Weil, drweil.com (published 5/2/2002)

"Lutein (a carotenoid) is especially important to the health of the eye and maintenance of good sight. Lutein is the yellow pigment found in the macula (the center of the retina). It is a crucial protector against macular degeneration and cataracts, because it counteracts damage from ultraviolet and blue light."

Dr. Robert Abel, M.D., ophthalmologist and author of "The Eye Care Revolution," (p. 299, © 1999 Kensington Books)

Considering all these facts it is safe to assume that lutein may help your body maintain and improve its tonus and it will keep your internal organs functioning properly. As with most supplements, however, minding the right dosage is vital.
