| A palm tree native to North America, saw palmetto
actually derives its name from the rather saw toothed stems that
are located on each individual palm leaf. Throughout the years,
there have been many health benefits associated with the use of
saw palmetto supplement, including treatments for digestive problems
such as benign hyperplasia; frequently referred to as BPH.
The side effects of benign prostatic hyperplasia, including uncomfortable
symptoms such as frequent urination have been improved by use of
saw palmetto supplements. It is believed that further growth of
the enlarged prostate can be inhibited by use of an oily secretion
from the berry of the saw palmetto plant. Studies have indicated
that men who use saw palmetto fro the purpose of treating BPH have
reported minimized sensation of a full bladder as well as a reduction
in painful urination.
Further research has shown that the plant may contain an anti-inflammatory
agent that is capable of restraining hormones, like testosterone;
which is believed to add to the growth of prostate cells. There
have been some indications that saw palmetto supplements may be
beneficial in providing protection against the actual development
of prostate cancer. Saw palmetto supplement can be a popular treatment
for BPH because it is commonly much less expensive than other medications.
It also tends to provider quicker benefits and is thought to be
less likely than other drugs to reduce sex drive or increase impotence.
The fact that there are few known side effects associated with
the use of saw palmetto supplements only adds to its popularity.
Only rare reports have indicated any problems with side effects
such as headache, dizziness, abdominal pain and nausea. There have
been a few rare reports that it may reduce sexual drive or increase
impotence. In very rare cases, saw palmetto supplements have been
linked to reports of male breast enlargement. Consumers can minimize
the symptoms of some side effects, such as nausea, by taking a small
meal with their supplement.
There are numerous varieties of saw palmetto supplements available
over the counter; such as tablets, tinctures, tea and softgel. Capsules
are also available. Consumers should look for products that contain
at least 85% fatty acids and sterols; the main active ingredients
in this herb. While the tea form may be popular, consumers should
be aware that it provides the least amount of health benefits and
can actually be difficult to dissolve in water.
