| It's almost a taboo subject amongst healthy men,
but Erectile Dysfunction, or ED, affects more than half of all men
over the age of 40. For them, a satisfying sex life seemed always
to be just out of reach. Being entirely unable to gain an erection,
or having difficulties in gaining an erection meant that even those
in a loving relationship were finding a fulfilling sex life impossible
to achieve.
Then, along came Viagra. The miracle pill promising to banish all
those uncomfortable and embarrassing failures in the bedroom. Of
course the effectiveness of any medication is subjective; that is,
depending on the patient, the results may be different.
Being a prescription drug, Viagra also falls into the category
of medicaments that can only be obtained with a medical professionals
say-so. For men suffering from ED this means admitting that they
have a problem to their doctor, something that most men will find
difficult. So, the first message is – talk to your doctor
about the problem, no matter how mild.
Even those with mild ED can benefit from Viagra, however the manufacturers
own studies show that even with a sugar pill substitute, 40% of
suffers saw an improvement in their ED simply as a result of the
boosted confidence resulting from admitting the problem and seeking
help.
So, Viagra might not even be necessary in a particular case, and
it is always as well to avoid taking unnecessary medication. However,
if all else fails, Viagra can help most men to achieve a better
erection, and maintain it during intercourse. That's what it's for,
and it does exactly what it says on the pack, hence it's popularity
worldwide.
Women also have their Viagra, and in their case it helps with many
problems related to sexual dysfunction such as pain during intercourse.
This is because Viagra tends to increase the flow of blood to the
genitals which, in women, leads to better lubrication. So, while
there's no magic libido pill for women, at least some of the root
causes of sexual dysfunction can be treated.
While there is little evidence to suggest dangerous side-effects
to using Viagra, there are many non-serious side effects. Firstly,
we should point out that any drug that increases blood flow around
the body, or to a specific part of the body, could carry risks for
those suffering from heart complaints; ask your doctor if unsure.
The side-effects that have been associated with Viagra use include
: headaches, diarrhoea, flushing, and a strange tinge to the vision,
or occasionally slight blurring. These side-effects become more
noticeable with higher doses (up to 100mg) of the drug, and are
generally accepted to be reasonably rare.
