Whey Protein Concentrate

Whey Protein Concentrate Benefits

When evaluating different whey protein concentrate products, it will be useful to know a little about why whey protein is considered to be beneficial, where it comes from, the claims that have been made of it, and the scientific foundations for such claims. Like all nutritional supplement products, the manufacturers use claims of different types to distinguish their products from others on the marketplace.

Firstly, some background information on whey protein. It has long been regarded simply as something to be thrown away as a by product in the dairy industry. However, cheap protein powders have used it, as it was considered just to be a solution to the problem of disposing of an unwanted by-product of cheese manufacturing.

The theory behind its use as a supplement is that it is rich in certain kinds of amino acids which may help delay fatigue during exercise. It is also claimed to be a protein that can help build muscle mass, improve the immune system including enhanced protection against micro organisms that can cause gastric infection.

Arguably the best products contain whey protein concentrate, which will contain around 80% protein content. More expensive whey protein powders claim anything up to 100% protein content, and are often called whey protein isolates. Scientifically speaking, there is little support for the claim that they are functionally superior, but the higher protein content will mean that the dosage can be lowered, and hence may prove better value for money.

Much of the whey protein research performed to date indicates that it has benefits in promoting weight gain, and offers a certain level of increased protection against gastric complaints. It has not been proven to improve the immune system, although studies have shown that some individuals do react favourably to whey protein in this respect.

Aside from the scientific whey protein research studies, manufacturers also test their whey protein products in the field, and independent consumers have also added their experiences to the growing volume of studies.

The conclusion is that whey protein concentrate is an excellent source of protein, offering a higher proportion of protein to fat than high protein foodstuffs such as egg and soy, with some additional benefits. Athletes training intensely, wanting a high intake of protein will probably benefit most from consuming whey protein products.

More information on whey protein concentrate can be found on various web sites on the internet, and it is worth checking around to see if the benefits you are looking for can be offered by such products.
